No, something that works 999 times out of 1000 isn't pointless. It's actually extremely useful and is only mildly inconvenient occasionally. That's still way better than just pointing at people, Michael.

I’m not Michael, as I just said. Someone else was Michael and here I stand, not wanting to be Michael. Thousands of Michaels, scattered around the world. You wouldn’t want to offend those poor people. What did they ever do to you?

More to the point, let's play by your rules. If names are helpful sometimes, then names are being helpful all across the world, every second. If the occasional instances where someone gets confused for someone else count, why don't they?

I never agreed names were helpful. That sounds entirely made up. Give me one example of a time a name actually was helpful and not in a hypothetical way.

When I said "hey Emma, are you streaming later?" on a voice chat, only one person answered, and it was Emma. That was yesterday. Why did you think that would be hard?

Yes, that must have been how it went. But if someone else had answered, there might have been an argument. Or if you meet a second Emma who you’d like to befriend, what then?

You could have told me not to. Lay down all the arbitrary rules of your own that you want. Does poor Emma only have the one name?

No, she has a last name. If there were two Emmas on that call with the same first name and the same last name, we'd give one or both of them nicknames. Problem solved. These are all solved problems that are only mildly inconvenient at worst.

Oh, but it only makes the whole mess more tangled. I haven’t even mentioned having to remember your own name and everyone else’s, on top of naming new things and people. Once you people start you can’t stop, you’re disgustingly addicted.

Maybe the problem is that you're either too dumb to remember people's names or hate people too much to put in the effort. We're getting on just fine.
