am i the asshole?

Life isn’t always black and white. Sometimes it’s hard to tell who’s really at fault, and no one wants to believe they’re the bad guy. Sometimes you need an outside opinion. Or several.

Tell your side of the story and crowdsource an honest answer to the age old question; Am I The Asshole?

Top Level

with your character explaining a situation where they might have been the asshole.

I had my maid sabotage the family car so I could walk to school with guy I have a crush on. I don’t think the chauffeur got in trouble but I probably should have thought of that. I just wanted to try walking to school once. AITA?

AITA for ignoring a villain’s gimmick? I’m a superhero and a villain caught me in a cage and said he’d release me if I could answer several riddles. I hate riddles, I’m not good at them, so I kicked the bard of the cage so hard they broke and then beat him up. The whole way to jail he was whining that I wasn’t playing fair. I say I’m not obligated to do homework to stop crime. So AITA?

NTA. If it's who I think it is - and there's no reason I can think of that it wouldn't be - you did the right thing. He can be annoying as fuck.

[personal profile] thesilentknight 2022-04-05 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It sucks, he’s gloating and calling me stupid for not being able to do riddles, but when I turn the tables and we’re doing something I’m good at (fighting) now it’s not fair. Aren’t I allowed to be good at things?

You know, if he starts doing that beat him up again. That person sounds obnoxious even if he wasn't a supervillain.

Personally I'd find beating his riddles and then rubbing his face in how easy they were more satisfying, but that's just my own tastes.

Either way, he sounds unbearable and good work.

Of course you are. He's just a whiner who can't stand not getting his way.

I try to not beat up people once they’re already subdued. It’s a bit excessive. I’m also trying not take my personal stuff out on him.

He’s a villain so I don’t confide in him, but there’s a reason I’m so bad at his riddles and he drives me crazy. Im dyslexic so intricate wordplay puzzles are not something I love.

That makes sense. Hitting people when they're down isn't a good thing - I'm from a fairly ruthless world, so I have less of an ethical problem with it, but I'm not a role model.

Ah, I see. It sounds like he has no problem rubbing it in when he has the upper hand over you, however. Does he know about your dyslexia, though I suspect he wouldn't care?

AITA for taking a breakup badly?

[personal profile] artoffxckery 2022-04-05 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I met this guy. My life was in kind of a rut, but this guy came along like a breath of fresh air, and we clicked instantly. Most people might think we were fuckin' insane, but it didn't matter because we were having a hell of a good time - most fun I've had in probably my whole life. I shared things with him I'd never shared with anyone else, and he seemed to respect and accept me, even the nastier parts of me. I gave up everything to save his life, and we even kissed! It was great!

I concocted a plan for us to run away together to China and he seemed on board with it, but then he stood me up. Left me hanging. Broke my fuckin' heart.

So I stole his ship, dumped all his fancy books and shit into the ocean, marooned his crew and I'm going on a pillaging spree. AITA?

He’d probably try to take advantage of it so best not to let him know. He’s obsessed with proving he’s smarter than others so he’d probably target me specifically if he knew I had a weakness.
silverseamariner: (Avast!)

Difficult to say. I've been on both sides of this equation - in my line of work, it's dangerous to get attached. Not only because there is the possibility of my relationships to be used against both myself and my crew, but because my people are long-lived by nature and I am going to outlive any lovers I have.

I...have a rather short temper, and if I was dumped I can easily see myself going on what you described, especially if the circumstances were dangerous. I have powerful - well, I wouldn't say enemies, but they're certainly not friends. Rivals, I suppose you could call them. Members of my own species who would pounce if I was in rough waters. We're an unscrupulous lot but I try to have some measure of standards.

To decide which of you is in the wrong, I'll need more information. Did this gentleman give you any indication of why he hung you out to dry?

Obsessed with proving he's smarter than others. Sounds like he needs a dose of humility, but that's just me.

People who know they're smart don't need to prove it like that, and it says much more about him than it does about you. You're the stronger of the two of you, by far.

I've been a pirate my entire fuckin' adult life, I know how it is. That's why this was such a big deal for me!

I don't know why he didn't show. He just didn't. I thought he wanted to go with me but I guess he decided he didn't.

Aye. I've been on the sea for almost a thousand years, but I've never had a situation exactly like the one you described.

My guess is either that he didn't want to hurt your feelings - in which case he was trying in his own misguided way not to hurt you, he didn't know what to say - or he wasn't willing to tell you himself. In which case you might be better off without him. It's a difficult thing, but people who aren't open about relationships can't be trusted to stay when things are hard.

No, I don't think you're a... a bad person for reacting as you did. Especially as he didn't even offer you an explanation for why he wouldn't run off with you.

[Aziraphale at least had the decency to do that.]

But the books? [A pained expression crosses his face.] Was that really necessary?

[personal profile] cryptsleeper 2022-04-06 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who has had bad and very dramatic break ups before: yta, but only because you marooned his crew. Letting them simply go in a neutral port once you took over the ship would have been more advisable. In the worst possible scenario, should they survive, you've made more enemies.

NTA. Obviously. The Riddler sucks. Besides, the idea that he gets to decide what is and isn't cheating is absolutely absurd. He might be good at puzzles, sure, but his inability to understand that he doesn't get to decide the rules is exactly why he's nothing more than an egotistical idiot.

I mean, yeah. I'm better off. You think so. Izzy thinks so. I don't need him. Fuckin'... gentleman pirate, fuckin' around with his books and his frilly shirts and whatnot.

So. I got rid of 'em.
artoffxckery: (007)

[personal profile] artoffxckery 2022-04-06 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
What else was I supposed to do with 'em? They're heavy. Take up a lot of space. Fire hazard.

[ They remind Ed of Stede. ]

Not like anyone on my crew can read 'em.

Marooning's standard operating procedure. I've been marooned loads of times, it's not personal. Besides, they're all incompetent, they'll get themselves killed long before they can track me down. I recruited the couple who are actually decent at the job.

The rest of 'em... nice. Nice guys. Too fuckin' nice for this line of work. [ Just like Stede. ]

But he never gets his way. How is he still this whiny? He could just stay home, I don’t want to fight him specifically.

Thank you, it’s actually nice to hear that. I almost feel bad for him, he’s kind of crazy when it comes to the riddles, but he puts people in danger so he has to be stopped.

It’s always something. When you or Batman solve his riddles does he just say good job? No, he always gets mad about something.

You're welcome, I'm glad I could help. And I wish you luck in dealing with this person in the future - some sympathy is understandable, but you also know protecting other people from him comes first.

It's a pity he can't find some more positive outlet for that impulse. Everyone has their own problems, and if his make him a threat to others he needs to be dealt with appropriately.

Usually I wouldn't throw out books, but I figure they remind you of this man, so I can understand why you did it.

Gentleman pirate. Did this person sign up for the job without knowing what he was doing? People like that on my crew usually end up going back to the clans they came from. Usually Vaprans - upper-class gelflings who join us for the romance but aren't used to getting dirty or hard work.
