Most "good people" just act the way they do because they're scared of being hated, not because it's what instinct tells them is right.

That's the wrong way to think about it.

People aren't "good" or "bad". People take good or bad actions, and make good or bad choices.

Alright then, most people only take good actions when they're scared of being hated for doing the opposite. Better?

If those so-called "good people" are calling you a "bad person", they're the ones who need a perspective change. Let me guess, you're putting down the assholes that deserve it, and they're clutching their pearls over 'murder'?

Agree. They estimate about 1% of the human population are sociopaths, and consequences are all that keep them in line.

No shit? I hadn't heard that one before but I fuckin' love it. Gonna throw that in the Professor's face next time he lectures us about peace, love and understanding.

I think it might even be underreported, based on how many selfish people I meet, but I try to stick to the facts.

Which Professor? Are you taking a philosophy course?

Charles Xavier? He runs the orphanage they call a "school" so it's not as obvious we all got abandoned or thrown out by our parents. Y'know, Xavier's school for super special kids blah blah whatever.

But the trouble with love and tolerance is that the people being encouraged to practice it most are often in the most danger.

That's probably true. I do think that most people have a gut reaction to certain things society insists are bad; they kneejerk at others doing something they might not judge as strongly if they took a few minutes to think about it.

But a lot of people will act differently if they think there's no way they'll suffer any consequences.
