That only depends on how you want to view it. The desire to live is in itself selfish. Perhaps not all life has the notion of selfishness, but it is all the same.

"I want to live."

And they act on it. Regardless of what their survival takes from another life.

Humans are selfish creatures all the same. They only have a more developed sense of selfishness. Call it "desire" if you want.

Ah, right you are. Humans are inherently selfish, chasing after their ridiculous little dreams all their lives.

But so what?

That's what makes us different from animals and machines. We act on our selfish desires willfully, no matter how illogical they are. Not because of instinct or programming, but because we choose to.

You say it like that selfishness is a bad thing, but I wouldn't have humanity any other way.

Of course it's a bad thing! That's what makes it so much fun to play with. Humans are so often consumed with trying to be "good" when they're naturally inclined to be "bad". It's amusing to watch them lie to themselves and others while they scramble around in attempts to make themselves feel better about what they think they shouldn't be doing.

Mortals are most interesting when they suffer in misery after all. That's when you get to see their real faces behind all the masks they wear. Forcing them to confront their real face before their inevitable demise is one of the greatest moments! Left on the brink of despair and abandoning their pathetic notions of hope and salvation!

No, their selfishness makes them fragile and best suited for entertainment. I'll never get tired of playing these fun games with mortal creatures!

... Indeed, humans can be self-righteous to the point of foolishness. Hypocrisy, even. And they deserve to be mocked and ridiculed for it. Called out for their lies they use to make themselves feel better about their actions.
