I'm Lela. Five must be a nickname, huh?

[ He lightly shakes his head. ]

It's not a nickname. Five's my just name. [ He doesn't necessarily want to explain his father to her, because she's a sweet kid. And he doesn't want to slip and start venting at her.]

Oh! Well, that's neat, too. I know a girl named Giggles. Names are funny.

Well they certainly can be. Especially if the person who gave you the name has a wicked sense of humor, but Lela is a nice name though.

Right! [She grins.] I'm a singer, too. And I'm learning how to surf.

Sounds like you got a wide range of interests and talents there. How's surfing been? I've kind of always wanted to learn myself, but I've never really had the chance.

I try! I love surfing. I live right near a beach, and the waves are amazing. It's very soothing, in a strange way.

Well that sounds like a pretty idea place to live. I've never had the pleasure of seeing a beach up close and personal.

Oh, it's beautiful! I spend so much of my time there.

I guess you got me there. You make a good point, calculating would probably be relevant in both of them. Especially if you are interested in customizing your bike or competing in surfing competitions.

Exactly! I've never competed, but my brother made sure I'd always be able to take care of my bike. I love playing around and seeing what I can get it to do.

No interest in competing? Or is it something you might consider in the future?

We don't really have real competitions for surfing, where I live. It's just about enjoying yourself. Sometimes we compete with each other, I guess, that can be fun.

Ah okay, guess friendly competitions are better in a way. Since no one takes it too seriously or personally. Plus you get to have some bragging rights for later.

They're pretty fun, too! Sometimes the winner buys milkshakes, or something.

Sounds like you got some pretty generous winners in your friends group then.
