unpopular opinions

Do you think people are too sensitive? Or that Superman isn't so super? Think cats aren't cute? The Beatles are overrated? Love pineapple on pizza? Maybe you just don't like chips rly. Even the best of us have some controversial opinions. Let people know what a monster you are.

top level

with your characters’ unpopular and/or controversial opinion. Or share few of them at once. In person or via text. Prepare for disagreement.

to tell them why they're wrong, validate a kindred spirit, or just troll them for caring about such a silly-ass thing in the first place.

Various organizations, corporations, or private citizens. Governments, even.

Iron Man gets his money from his company. He funded the Avengers through the Maria Stark Foundation, used to give them a thousand dollars a week for 'living expenses.' I don't know if he still does now, though, things have changed a bit since then. Spider-Man had Parker Industries backing him up for a while, before that whole thing collapsed thanks to the owner being an enormous idiot. The Fantastic Four are incorporated and have an entire business wing you don't hear much about to handle their inventions and merchandising. Damage Control used to employ a bunch of folks.

Hell, I used to work for the government. Got a million dollars for being a part of one of their programs for a year, in addition to royalties I got from toy sales. Retired off of it, now I spend my time managing charities. I probably do more good with those than I did when I was actually saving the world, come to think of it.

Heroes using their own money hardly counts as being paid. As for private citizens and the government, why should they be responsible? I doubt all of them even want heroes around.

True, I'm just used to separating Stark and Iron Man because of how many years he was pretending to be his own bodyguard.

Never said they should be, just that they're the ones who tend to. And, even if they don't want heroes around, it's pretty undeniable that they need heroes around. Hell, in the past fifteen years we've had, what, at least two alien invasions a year?

[The sliding timeline tends to make these things a little ridiculous, admittedly.]

We've only had two, but the last one did almost end existence as we know it, so there's that.

Being a hero is a choice, though, isn't it? If they're for hire then certainly they should be getting some kind of compensation, but most of them are doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.

Funny how often that happens.

Being a hero's definitely a choice, but it's awfully hard to live off of well-wishes and gratitude alone. Even if you're just running around in jeans and a T-shirt, you're going to go through a lot of them. Unless you've got some kind of aura of invincibility and can travel faster than the speed of sound, you're always going to need cash for materials and fuel. We're not even getting into medical bills.

But if it's a choice shouldn't part of that choice involve whether or not they can afford it?

You think most people who're just starting out are gonna consider that? By the time they get established, most of them start thinking of it as a responsibility.

It's absolutely a choice, but a lot of the community just doesn't feel that way.

Anyone who's starting out in life should be considering their lifestyle choices and whether or not it's sustainable. Just because they don't doesn't make it any less their own legitimate responsibility.

I can't say you're wrong, but most people just aren't going to sit down and plot out all the upsides and the downsides when it comes to choosing this lifestyle.

It's easy to sit on the outside and consider these things logically, it's a little different when you're already in the mindset where you're quoting "With great power comes great responsibility" and thinking that people depend on you.

Who said I was sitting on the outside?

Never said you were. Just that it was easier before you got sucked into the mindset.

Then the mindset needs to change.

You're welcome to do what you can on that front. I don't see it happening any time soon, though.

I already am. It doesn't happen overnight.
