bad rap

The things we become known for aren’t always what we’d like to be known for. Reputations are hard to run from. Sometimes they’re not even deserved. So here’s your chance to set the record straight. Clear up some misplaced assumptions, debunk any rumours about yourself and defy your stereotypes.

how to play:

Top level with something(s) your character is tired of people assuming about them, blaming them for, or pigeonholing them about, etc. Say it in person or over text.

Comment on any surprising, or not so surprising declarations.

Yeah..

[And, because Asahi doesn't know this person, it's easier for him to elaborate.]

I am thinking of studying fashion design. I don't think anyone would expect it from me, but... it sounds really interesting.

Well, it's true that fashion designers are more often women than men in many countries, but times are changing. There are lots of men who have a good eye for aesthetics. And while it's not necessarily the most conventional choice of career, it is a recession-proof industry, with good room for advancement and a lack of the usual neopotism that plagues a lot of lines of work. Personally, I think it's not a bad idea, so long as you also take some business courses and are careful about who you work with when you start out.

[There are a lot worse ways to make money than designing clothes. She should know. Honestly, she's onboard with this plan. Live your best life, Asahi.]

[Wow! He wasn't really expecting her to care so much, but it's touching. And some of what Iskra says sounds really important, actually- maybe he should take notes?]

I will! [He vows, with regards to the business courses.] Thank you for the advice.

You may want to look into foreign language courses, too. It's not mandatory, of course, but most designers end up working with people in another neighboring country to produce their clothes once they get bigger. And you'll probably find that looks good on applications to work for fashion start-ups and established companies, too. You want to establish that you're serious about your work but also that you're not pretentious or too snooty to deign to work with foreign enterprises.

For whatever it's worth, coming from a strange, I think you can do it. It's all about work ethic - being a man in a traditionally feminine field of work won't matter if you work hard.

[Asahi continues to nod, and hopes he can remember this all so he can jot it into his notes app.]

T-Thank you, miss. Is... Are you familiar with this industry? You seem to know a lot about it.

My boyfriend is a clothing designer. On a more local level than what most aspire to - the Balkan countries are all small and it's hard to get his name out there past the region - but it's something he gets a lot of joy from. What he makes is more practical and longlasting than fast fashion or the most disposable attitude towards clothing found in Western Europe. A lot of recycled cloth and repurposed linens are involved, too. Our country is poor and so are the people, often. But through making clothes that make the harsh winters more survivable and work a little easier, he feels like he's contributing something, and I'd like to think he is. And if business keeps improving, it's likely one day I'll be able to retire from my own less savory line of work. That's the dream, anyway.

His family came around to the idea, by the way, if that's something you worry about. When they saw it was making him happy, their reservations about it eroded over time.

[Oh, wow. Asahi isn't interested in this business for any noble reasons like that, so hearing about what Iskra's boyfriend uses his skills to do is both humbling and motivating.]

That's amazing. Really! It... gives me a lot to think about. So thank you.

[Iskra smiles at him. He seems like a good person, and a good listener. Those are both assets in an often collaborative field like fashion. He's got what it takes to make it.]

I'm glad I could help. And I hope you get the chance to pursue your dream.

T-Thank you, miss! [Asahi bows politely at her.] I hope you are able to retire, too.
