It really depends on the law and how it's enforced. The world without any law is much, much worse.

From where I'm sittin' the world would be better off without 'em.

Even if that was possible, there will always be some sort of law. Leaders emerge within groups. People want someone to look up to for leadership and survival.

The law just protects those who can pay them, either with money or with favors.

They don't help the beggar on the corner, they don't listen to the woman gettin' beat on in an alley, they don't do shit for the common man, they just make life hell for them.

If your world does help all them folk, either it went through all them to get where it currently is, or you're an entirely damned different species.

To me it sounds like you live somewhere with a terrible system of law.

I only recently became king. It's a long story.

Not long ago there was a pretty big disaster. Without people stepping up to provide protection and risk their lives to get all sorts of supplies, a lot of refugees would have died. So it's tough for me to condemn leaders. [He offers a small smile and a shrug.]

Well I don't like kings much more than the every day lawmen, less so in fact considerin' many folk here have ancestors that left a monarchy some years ago and fought in a bloody war to keep away from his greedy paws.

One incident ain't enough to balance out the good from the bad. If it were that easy, I'd be a goddamned saint with how many people I've helped compared to those I've killed.

I am, yeah.

[Hmph. Oh well. There's actually something kind of nice about not being recognized.]

I'm not saying I'm perfect or a saint. No one is. But I'm not about to leave people to fend for themselves again. Maybe I can learn from people like you so I don't make the same mistakes you've experienced.

I never really wanted to be king. Fate had a different plan.

That's fair. As much as I've dealt with the law, politics itself ain't my strong suit neither. I leave that to Dutch and Hosea.

But as much as I don't like lawmen, or monarchs for that matter, I'm not unreasonable. I'd be willing to lend an ear.

Come to think of it, you might be the first royalty I ever met.

Hm, don't like them, especially the ones that you wake up after feelin' like you're falling.

Fishing? Now we're talking. Same, I enjoy a hunt or a stagecoach robbery but sometimes nothing beats just castin' a line in a river. Don't have a lot of patience for stuff, fishing is one of them I do, even when I catch nothing.

Prob'bly more out there but best I could come up with.

I've seen a lot of people whose only mistake was upsetting someone with money and power. The law only protects those in power.

I've found sometimes it's better to take a cold bath than deal with some towns.

My prey is usually of the sentient variety, but I do agree with the sentiment.

Upsettin' those with money is our specialty, but yea, the law don't protect beggars, only those who can line their pockets, or do them favors in the event the tables turn.

I usually clean up at camp, but there's only so much a barrel of rain water or a river can wash off. A long ride on horseback leaves one mighty uncomfortable sometimes.

Oh you're a bounty hunter then. Well, stay away from the Van Der Linde Gang otherwise we might be crossin' unfriendly paths. Though them O'Driscolls are all yours for the taking, prob'bly not worth much though considerin' they're a penny a dozen [he chuckles].

If you make the kind of enemy who can afford my services, crossing my path is probably the least of your concerns. Fortunately for you and others, I'm not certain I'm going to be taking on more bounties anytime soon. Got some things to do.

Don't make it seem like a challenge, knowing the gang they might try and do just that for the fun of it.

Not the smartest move, but I've seen worse. Guess we'd find out whether someone can tempt me into taking another bounty.

What kind of an idiot would say you can't?

Some folk, believing hunting animals to be unnecessary now that we farm and raise livestock and such. But takin' care of livestock ain't easy, and buying a decent cut of meat can cost as much as you'd get if you sold a whole deer to a butcher.

Yeah. I respect farmers, but not everybody has to be one. Some people have other jobs to do. So if anybody tells me it's wrong for me to do some quick kill for a dinner, then they don't know what they're talking about.
