Everyone loves a hero. As long as they're youthful, hot, charming and conventionally attractive. Meanwhile, all the old, ugly, broke down, difficult-to-love, bastards out there are toiling away in lonesome obscurity trying not to daydream too much about what a relief it would be if someone came along with a soft touch, and a kind word, and the promise that it'll be ok.

Whether canon or fandom branded them as such, whether it's well deserved or not, there's lots of unlovables. They know most beasts never transform for their beauties. They've probably noticed that even in the Disney version Quasimodo ends up alone ffs. Still, props to them for maintaining a shred of optimism about finding love. Even if they'll never admit to being hopeful.

A vice admiral, as she understands it, is some sort of exceptionally senior captain, and in ordinary circumstances that would make her very wary of approaching him. Such people don't like to be bothered by junior careerists. Yet she doesn't like that he's been left standing off on his own, and whatever the real story is behind his admittedly alarming appearance, she's not fazed by it. Besides, how often does she get to practice her Russian with someone other than Leah Savitskaya? What's the worst that'll happen - he'll be abrupt with her and walk away, most likely. She's not unduly sensitive; it won't trouble her.

So Ari approaches him, young spacer in her formal blue Tradeliner uniform, and when she speaks it's in fluent Russian, albeit with the accent of Cardalek colony to give away that it's certainly not her first language.]

[It had been years since Alexei Stukov had been around this many humans. It seemed so strange now. It was the race he had been born into and had spent fifty years in. He could remember being human...but it seemed so far and away. The last decade has been spent in decidedly nonhuman spaces. After his escape from Skygeirr Platform, he'd had a high ranking position in the Zerg Swarm. Following the ascension of Overqueen Zagara, he'd been seemingly promoted to her adviser. She used him largely for dealing with the Terrans and other humans they encountered. It wasn't surprising. Of all the Swarm, he had the most outwardly human appearance. He was a biped, after all, with the majority of the infestation that had transformed his body taking root mainly on his left side. The insect like extra limbs on his left shoulder flexed when he thought of them and the pulsing glow under his skin glowed a bit brighter for a moment. Even over ten years later, it still affected him, though he supposed it wasn't the sort of thing one ever truly got over.

Overqueen Zagara had once again sent him on a diplomatic mission. The Zerg were trying to become something else under her rule. He found their efforts to improve themselves admirable and he had nowhere else to go. The humans here gave him a wide berth, though he supposed he could not blame them. Zerg infestation was deep and aggressive. His own mutation was stable and had not progressed or changed in over a decade. He'd also been tested and cleared numerous times for in person interactions. He was not contagious and had not been in years. He was what he was and he wasn't going to accidentally spread infestation. However, he could not blame anyone for rather being safe than sorry.

So...here he stood, looking out at the stars, human and zerg hands resting on the railing.]

Stukov could hear footsteps approaching him and he turned around, glowing eyes moving up and down the young lady. She was young, but everyone under thirty looked like a child to him these days, it was just a side effect of getting older that the Zerg had nothing to do with. He was genuinely shocked when she spoke Russian to him. It was very good, despite clearly not being her first language, though it had an accent he could not recognize. It filled his heart with a sudden burst of warm nostalgia. A soft smile crossed his features. He nodded in greeting.]

[Sure, people say they can get past the scars on his face, the rusted iron rasp of his voice, the rough hill-folk cast of his features. And maybe they can, though by Eskel's own admission the only time he's had any "luck with the ladies" since his disfigurement was some on-the-clock flirting he did at a masked ball where the offending article was entirely concealed. Some say his impeccable manners and steady temperament make up for it, but that's assuming he's on his best behavior. Eskel's a real boor when he's drunk and when he drinks it's usually to a state of "crawl on the floor" fall-down drunk. He can be mistrustful and if he doesn't like or feel at ease with somebody (like a certain violet-eyed sorceress), he's not subtle about it. And could you love a man with a history of abdicating and deferring his responsibilities? If you knew that Eskel abandoned his own Child of Surprise and left her to a life of brutal mistreatment? That he abandoned her twice, a second time when she came to him as an adult seeking refuge from the murderous designs of her brother and his court mage? That he only hunted her down and killed her, a futile attempt to clean up his mess, after she had been burning and murdering her way through the countryside for years?

All of that would probably be off-putting if he was just a normal man but he isn't. He's a witcher, and a pretty brutal specimen of one. What would the neighbors think? And there's a good chance that every time he leaves, he won't come back. And that you'll hear tell of him burned on a pyre...if you ever find out what became of him at all (best case scenario, perhaps he just didn't come back because he won't settle anywhere below the crumbling keep he was raised in). OTA for gen, 21+ for shipping. Marginal preference for women, but he's not offended by the idea of a man taking a liking to him (apart from wondering if he's touched in the head because of all of the above).]
