Do you think people are too sensitive? Or that Superman isn't so super? Think cats aren't cute? The Beatles are overrated? Love pineapple on pizza? Maybe you just don't like chips rly. Even the best of us have some controversial opinions. Let people know what a monster you are.

with your characters’ unpopular and/or controversial opinion. Or share few of them at once. In person or via text. Prepare for disagreement.

to tell them why they're wrong, validate a kindred spirit, or just troll them for caring about such a silly-ass thing in the first place.

Barrington Whelk | The Raven Cycle | OTA
[There are more controversial things he could say, but he's feeling defensive about this today (and apparently has his teacher hat on after hours - go figure).]

You are typically in attendance. [He also kind of agrees, but he's your teacher, and this is like, his job, so...he kind of has to add a lecture.
God, when did he become "the man", man?] Flattered as I am, Mr. Lynch, it's that sort of attitude that will end up resulting in your expulsion from Aglionby.no subject
The only thing keeping Ronan from getting expelled was Gansey, and that was even wearing thin.
The thought of expulsion would be an absolute godsend. ]

Par sit fortuna labori.
[Pop quiz, though he's certain Ronan will pass - "let the success be equal to the labor". It's a cheap phrase, unrealistic, one that Whelk doesn't believe in. But it sounds like something a teacher should say to an underachieving student, so he says it.]

Why should it be required...?
no subject
[Not Japanese, he realizes, but it will help Mr. Kageyama with his English.]
You'll speak it as you learn English without even realizing it, I can guarantee you.
no subject
So if I learn Latin, then I'll know thirteen other languages?
no subject
[He has not once wondered this about Kageyama.]
That's not what I said.
It will aid you in learning other languages should you choose to study them.
And it will help you with English, which you are already learning.
no subject
What is the importance of learning other languages?
[ Meaning: How will this help me on my path to becoming a strong volleyball player? ]
no subject
[Part of being a teacher is knowing what motivates a student, and even though Whelk hates his job and all of his students (including Mr. Kageyama here), he's good at what he does. Also, Tobio literally never shuts up about volleyball ever, and it is no mystery to absolutely anyone that he is on the team - setter, we know.]
Would it not benefit you to be able to communicate if you were to begin playing internationally?
[Also, and now he begins speaking very slowly:]
And you're failing English.
no subject
And worst of all... Tobio is failing English. ]
So you're saying if I learn Latin, I will have an easier time learning English?

[The venn diagram of people who deeply don't like Latin and people who regularly use Latin to summon demons has Carmel in the middle.]

False. Latin is, on the contrary, very much alive.
I just used four words with Latin roots in that sentence alone.
[Want him to keep counting? He'll do it.]
no subject
[Unfortunately, Whelk, you're talking to someone who has a deeply rooted hatred of Latin because of colonialism. She might not pay attention to 3/4ths of her classes, but that's okay. One of her best friends wrote the book on why Latin sucks for magic purposes.]
Knowing the Latin root of words doesn't mean fuck or shit for casting in other languages, though. Oh, you wanna decaer something? Comes from decadere, so it must be something to do with falling. Then you cast it and all your plants are dead.
no subject
I'm talking about linguistics, not...casting. [The exasperated Jesus Christ is implied. Besides, what sort of idiot tries to mix up random languages while completing rituals--
[No. No! We are not going there. He silently tells the whispers in his head to shut up.]
Mixing languages unnecessarily is one thing, but if you want to learn languages, having an understanding - even basic at minimum - of Latin is invaluable.
Not that half the languages rooted in Latin don't mix in words anyway.
no subject
[Linguistics and casting are synonymous, where she's from. She could go on a completely different rant about "mixing languages unnecessarily" - which is just about the most white bullshit she's ever heard - but she promised Kyle she would try to not get arrested for at least a week.
It's going poorly, but it's the thought that counts, right?]
But because people like you are busy simping for Latin, everyone thinks that's actually effective casting. It isn't.
no subject
Is "Latin for Babies" an actual class where you come from? Why do you keep saying that?
[As a Latin teacher, he is extra annoyed by this for some reason. Also, he is not sure what "simping" means, but he is afraid to ask since the last time he asked a stupid question about teen lingo he was told he "didn't pass the vibe check", booed by a bunch of 17-year-olds, and made to feel all around much older than he actually is. Highly unpleasant experience. Would not recommend.]
no subject
Of course it's a real class. Isn't that what you teach?
[This what you get for simping Latin, Whelk.]

[Okay, he'll admit it has a little to do with demons, but that's not why he brought it up!]
Not my thinking. You sound insane.
no subject
[He was taking that as a compliment.]
Gotta ask, why else would breathers learn Latin?
no subject
[Somehow Whelk feels like his usual explanation will not have the desired effect on this man. Why did he bother with bringing this up again?]
It's a substantial root of several other languages. An aid in linguistics.
Helps you learn.
[He sounds tired already and they've barely begun speaking.]

I'm not sure what sort of parties you've been attending, but I don't think I'd soon like to accompany you.
